Greenville man arrested in shooting death of Iraqi war vet

Authorities say questions still remain after an arrest was made in the killing of an Iraq War veteran who was shot in the head while he was in a vehicle on Pelham Road early Sunday morning.

Authorities say questions still remain after an arrest was made in the killing of an Iraq War veteran who was shot in the head while he was in a vehicle on Pelham Road early Sunday morning.

Billy Lemurces Taylor, 33, of 205 Frank St., was charged with murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and discharging a firearm into a vehicle while occupied, according to warrants.

Rodney Jermaine Nesbitt, 29, of Moore, was shot while he was in a Chevy Tahoe in the 3600 block of Pelham Road, authorities said.

Nesbitt and another person were shot after authorities received reports of an altercation at a Pelham Road business at 3:38 a.m., authorities have said.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether Taylor acted alone, whether the altercation started inside a nightclub and whether the shots were fired from another vehicle, said Jonathan Smith, Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Taylor is the only person charged so far, but the investigation is ongoing, Smith said.

Nesbitt was an army veteran.

“He had a big heart,” said his father, Kenneth Fields. “Everyone that you talked to always said how nice he was.”

Nesbitt had just turned 29 and was out celebrating his birthday, Fields said.
