Six people are being treated for minor injuries after a wreck on Interstate 20 involving two busloads of young people going to Camden’s Carolina Cup Saturday morning.

The buses each swerved to avoid a couch in the roadway, then the second bus hit the first bus, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Judd Jones.

The accident happened just after 9 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-20 at the 87-mile marker near Elgin. The interstate was blocked for two hours, with heavy traffic from the Carolina Cup being encouraged to exit, Jones said.

Jones said eight people were transported from the scene.

Six people were being treated at KershawHealth for minor injuries and were not expected to be admitted, said nursing supervisor Pam Talbott.

Talbott said those on the buses were believed to be college students mostly living in the immediate area but are from “all over.”

Jones said the first bus was carrying 47 people and the second, 56.
