A suspect under surveillance for alleged drug dealing was shot by a Richland County sheriff’s deputy Tuesday, after the young man refused to stop for questioning and tried to run over the officer with his car, officials said.
Ty-meek Tyheen Payne, 21, was shot once in the forearm, Sheriff Leon Lott said.
About 11 a.m., Payne was boxed in by officers at a St. Andrews apartment complex near Broad River and Marley roads. After he continued driving toward Deputy Kirk Willis, the officer fired an unknown number of times, Lott said.
There was a short car chase ending near the Dutch Fork Post Office, along Briargate Circle.
“As he was driving, he was throwing drugs out the window,” Lott said. Officers recovered marijuana.
Lott said the three officers had cause to stop the suspect, though he wouldn’t say what made them suspect he had drugs with him other than “the results of the investigation” that began with a citizen tip in March.
Once the suspect was arrested, officers went to his Battleford Road apartment, where they found three high-school age females and one male. Deputies allegedly saw a gun and some marijuana, then sought a warrant to search the apartment, the sheriff said.
The wounded suspect faces charges of attempted murder of a police officer and multiple drug charges.
Briargate Circle is off Broad River Road near Interstate 20.
