Two businesses were cited Monday for selling alcohol or tobacco to underage customers, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews announced Tuesday.
Matthews said his office conducted compliance checks in 47 businesses.
Only the Shop ‘n Go in Dusty Bend was cited for unlawful sale of alcohol to a minor. Kashmiris in Cassatt was cited for unlawful sale of tobacco to a minor.
These compliance checks are funded by LRADAC and are conducted by local law enforcement using minors with parental consent.
In many cases, Matthews said, retail establishments are targeted because of complaints made to the Sheriff’s Office by parents or other concerned citizens that minors are buying tobacco or alcohol in those stores.
“I am glad to see that the stores in Kershaw County that can sell alcohol and tobacco are doing a better job of screening those to whom they sell these items. Our goal is for there to be zero citations for this,” Matthews said in a release.
