One person was rescued from the waters of the Congaree River after he jumped from the Gervais Street bridge on Thursday afternoon.

Brick Lewis with the Columbia Fire Department said the call came in at 1:45 p.m. Responding agencies also included the Columbia Police Department, Richland County EMS, West Columbia Fire Department and Cayce Public Safety.

The male rescued jumped from the Gervais Street bridge, according to preliminary information from Jennifer Timmons with the Columbia Police Department. EMS transported the patient to a local hospital, where medical staff say injuries are non-life-threatening, Timmons said.

Lewis said a ladder truck that is swift-water certified executed the rescue from the shoreline. The male was about 40 feet off the shoreline, he said.
