After a nearly four hour search, divers with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources recovered the body of a 49-year-old man who drowned in the Broad River Saturday night. His identify has not been made public.

DNR was called to the scene just north of the Broad River Bridge after the Columbia Fire Department responded to a call of a possible drowning at 4 p.m., DNR’s Capt. Robert McCullough said.

A group of people on the west side of the river near the start of the Columbia Canal said they were swimming when the man disappeared.

DNR used divers in the water and a plane flying overhead to help search the area.

The area where the drowning occurred is a popular section of the river for recreation, McCullough said.

An autopsy will be performed Sunday, Richland County coroner Gary Watts said.
