A thief with a predilection for Newport brand cigarettes broke into three Sumter businesses and stole cartons of Newports worth nearly $4k between June 23 and June 30, Sumter police said in a news release. Police released surveillance video from two of the businesses, hoping that the public can help identify the suspect in the thefts.
The first theft occurred sometime between midnight and 1:45 am. June 23 at Young’s on East Charlotte Avenue in Sumter. Sixty packs of Newport 100s were taken.
Shortly before 11 pm on June 29, a box of cartons of Newports was taken from the A and P Mart on Boulevard Road in Sumter. Late the next night, June 30, 12 cartons of Newports were taken from the Busy Bee off East Liberty Street in Sumter.
The suspect fled at least one of the break-in locations on a red bicycle.
