Fire crews from several departments were on the scene Sunday night of what were multiple brush fires believed to be the work of an arsonist, officials say.

Firefighters from the Irmo Fire Department responding to a call around 5:30 p.m. Sunday found between 40 to 45 small fires along a trail in a heavily wooded area behind Shaw Industries and the Seven Oaks Shopping Center off St. Andrews Road, Irmo Fire Marshal Jeff Allen said.

"It looked like someone walked through the brush and set a fire about every 50 feet or so," he said.

Fire crews from the Lexington County and Columbia-Richland fire departments assisted the Irmo Fire Department in putting out the fires while members of SLED looked for additional hot spots from a helicopter overhead, Allen said.

In addition, deputies with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department patrolled the area looking for suspects.

As of 9 p.m. Sunday, fire officials continued to monitor the scene and work crews from the S.C. Forestry Commission were planning to plow firebreaks in the affected area, Allen said.

Those with information on the fires are asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
