Columbia store clerks cited for selling alcohol to minors

Clerks at several Columbia convenience and liquor stores have been cited for allegedly providing alcohol to minors, officials say.

As part of an undercover operation, officers with the Columbia Police Department along with agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division visited 16 stores in an area north of Columbia on July 25, Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said in a statement released Monday.

The operation was meant to address community concerns about underage alcohol sales and consumption in the area, Holbrook said.

Six store clerks at the following addresses were cited for selling beer, wine or liquor to shoppers under the age of twenty-one:

• 4101 Monticello Road
• 5901 North Main Street
• 4007 Farrow Road
• 6132 North Main Street
• 5050 Fairfield Road
• 5318 Fairfield Road

In at least one case, a clerk allegedly asked for proper identification but still sold alcohol to the minor, Holbrook said. In other cases, the clerks failed to ask for proper identification.
