Four Allen University students were held at gunpoint and robbed Tuesday evening, Aug. 12, as they walked to a store near the in-town school, according to campus and Columbia police.

A incident report filed with the Allen University Police Department said the students were walking near Hampton and Oak streets just before 9:30 p.m. when they were approached by three black males, dressed in red shirts and pants -- one wearing a USC baseball cap -- and held them at gunpoint.

The armed suspects took the students’ cellphones then ran toward Gonzales Gardens Apartments located near Forest Drive, according to the report.

Moore said campus police are investigating the incident and have notified the Columbia Police Department, who have offered their assistance if needed.

Moore said that students and faculty were notified by phone messages of the robbery through a new alert system that sends information by text message and email.

Classes started Tuesday at the school.
