A Roebuck man was arrested for allegedly robbing a Sumter convenience store on Saturday.

Wilbert Franklin, 50, was arrested and charged with armed robbery Sunday after tips about his identity led police to his location, officials with the Sumter Police Department said in a statement released Sunday night.

The robbery happened shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kangaroo on West Liberty Street in Sumter. Initial reports indicate that a man entered the store then covered his face before going behind the counter and telling the clerk to open the cash register, officials said.

The clerk was made to believe the man had a weapon. However, a weapon has not been recovered.

An undetermined amount of money was taken from the store before the man fled on foot heading east. No one was injured in the incident.

Franklin’s arrest record includes convictions for armed robberies and assaults with intent to kill, the statement said. His most recent arrest was in July for public disorderly conduct.

Franklin’s last known address was listed as a residence in Roebuck, South Carolina.

He is being held at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.
