Officers with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources have arrested and charged a man in connection with a Lake Marion boat crash that killed a University of South Carolina student in July.

Chad Morris, 38, was charged with reckless homicide and failure to render aid Monday afternoon, Capt. Robert McCullough with the department said.

Hailey Joanne Bordeaux, 21, of Sumter, was killed in the crash after the boat she was in collided with another on the lake on July 4.

Bordeaux was with her boyfriend and two others in a boat that was at a standstill near Scarborough Landing when the crash occurred just before 1 a.m., McCullough said earlier in July. Their boat was struck by another that was traveling in the area.

Bordeaux was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead, according to Charles Jackson, a deputy coroner at the Clarendon County coroner’s office. There were no other reports of injuries from the accident.

Bordeaux was a rising senior majoring in early childhood development at USC.

Morris was taken to the Clarendon County Detention Center. It was unknown Monday night whether Morris was released on his own personal recognizance bond.
