Rock Hill shooting victim able to speak with investigators

The victim in a possible home invasion was able to speak with deputies while receiving treatment for a gunshot wound at a Charlotte hospital.

Slightly more than 24 hours after the victim of a suspected home invasion was found shot in his home, investigators were able to speak with him at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Wayne O’Neil Whiteside, 69, was found by deputies at a home on Gentry Lane in Rock Hill early Saturday morning. Deputies were responding to a possible home invasion.

Whiteside was airlifted to CMC Main. His status is unknown.

On Sunday afternoon, Faris said investigators did not have additional information to release about the crime, including possible suspects or details.

Whiteside’s family members told The Herald’s news partner, WSOC-TV, that two men broke into Whiteside’s house, tied him up, robbed him and shot him. Family members described Whiteside as a disabled war veteran who served two terms in Vietnam in the Marine Corps.
