Phone scammers have been busy in the Midlands.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott warned Friday that people claiming to be sheriff’s deputies have called Midlands residents to inform them that they missed jury duty and a warrant had been issued for their arrest, BUT, for anywhere from $500 to $4000, the warrant can be canceled.
If you get a call like this, or someone leaves a message on your answering machine with this story, don’t believe it, Lott said. “Law enforcement will never make this type of call nor ask you to send in money.”
The best course of action, Lott said, is to tell the caller not to call again and hang up the phone.
