Richland County coroner Gary Watts identified the man who died in a single car crash Wednesday on Old Leesburg Road as Dajour N. Johnson, 18, of Hallbrook Drive in Columbia. Watts said it isn’t known if Johnson was driving the 1997 Acura, or was a passenger, when a Richland County Sheriff patrol tried to pull it over for a traffic stop at Hazelwood Road and Burdell Drive in Lower Richland on Wednesday.
The vehicle, with three people in it, fled the scene and was pursued by the patrol car, sheriff department spokesman Lt. Curtis Wilson said. Around 3:30pm, the car crashed and flipped nearly three and a half miles away on Old Leesburg Road near Fort Jackson’s Gate 5.
Johnson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the car and killed when it flipped over. Two other people in the car were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries, Watts said.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department, SC Highway Patrol and Richland County coroner’s office continue to investigate.
