Eleven men, ranging in age from 49 to 80-years-old have been charged with multiple counts of ‘betting, pool selling, and the like’ a misdemeanor charge that can result, if convicted, in 6 months in jail and/or a $1000 fine on each count.
Ten of the men, all from either Dillon or nearby Hamer, SC, were taken into custody Wednesday and Thursday, the State Law Enforcement Division announced in a news release. The 11th man, Alfonso Lee McArthur, 60, from Rowland, NC was also charged with felony possession, manufacture and trafficking of methamphetamine, cocaine and other controlled substances.
The 11 men were arrested on 107 warrants that alleged the sale of betting pool tickets for NFL, NHL and NBA games ranging in price from $1 to $30. Sold at a burger and beer joint on East Hampton Street in Dillon, most of the tickets appeared to be in the $5 -$10 range.
Charged with gambling were:
Gilbert L. Blue, 59, of Dillon - 30 counts; Johnnie Lee Jennings, 70, Dillon - 27 counts; Willie McCullum, 67, of Hamer - 14 counts; Alfonia McKellar, 65, Hamer - 9 counts; Johnny Campbell, 49, of Dillon - 9 counts; Lorence Bethea, 65, of Dillon - 5 counts; Johnny Lee Betha, 80, of Dillon - 3 coun ts; Lewis Earl Inman (no age given), of Dillon - 3 counts; James Willie Washington, 61, of Dillon - 3 counts; James Randy McCullum, 50, of Hamer - 2 counts; and, Alfonso Lee McArthur, 60, from Rowland, NC - 1 gambling and 1 drug charge.
The 11 men were being held at the Dillon County Detention Center Thursday night.
