Orangeburg County deputies who charged the father of a 16-month-old child with child abuse have now charged the child’s mother.
Dixie Ann Miller, 29, has been charged with children/legal custodian, unlawful neglect of child or helpless person, according to Sheriff Leroy Ravenell.
Miller sought medical treatment for her son Monday when he was not having regular bowel movements or ‘acting as a normal child,’ Ravenell said. A medical evaluation indicated the child had internal injuries and needed emergency surgery.
The child suffered fractured ribs and a severed bowel, Ravenell said. Miller was charged for allowing the child’s father to beat the child and not seeking immediate medical attention for the child.
The child’s father, 25-year-old Ryan Lamar Bessinger, was charged with abuse by a parent/guardian, other allowing another person to inflict great bodily harm upon a child.
The investigation indicates Bessinger struck the child in the abdomen on November 25 and child had been suffering from those injuries ever since, Ravenell said.
“Under no circumstances, should a 16-month-old child be squeezed or struck by a grown man with such force to fracture ribs and perforate the child’s bowel,” Ravenell said. “This is an ongoing investigation, and we will determine if other adults knew about this baby’s injuries and failed to protect him from his father.”
