A Lexington County woman has been arrested on charges of reckless homicide after she ran over another woman at her birthday party, officials say.
Katie McKenzie Leavitt, 20, was arrested Monday in connection with the incident which occurred Saturday in the 100 block of Calvin Court near the town of South Congaree, Sheriff Lewis McCarty said in a statement released Monday night.
According to arrest warrants, Leavitt was recklessly operating her 2004 Honda Accord sedan near her home on Calvin Court around 10 p.m. Saturday when she drove over Laura Diane Merck, 20, of Gaston. Merck had been riding on the hood of Leavitt’s car following a birthday party for Leavitt at a home on Calvin Court, McCarty said.
Friends drove Merck to Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia where hospital personnel reported the collision to the sheriff’s department. Due to the severity of her injuries, Merck was then transferred to Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia. Merck died at Palmetto Health Richland on Sunday, McCarty said.
In addition to being charged with reckless driving, Leavitt was charged with failing to report a motor vehicle collision that caused great bodily injury, driving with a suspended driver’s license and driving without car insurance.
Leavitt was was taken to the county’s detention center. She was released on Monday after paying a bond of $19,042. The circumstances of the collision remain under investigation, McCarty said.
