Columbia firefighters responded to a structure fire at a duplex early Wednesday morning which left six individuals displaced from the two residences, according to fire officials.
Brick Lewis, a department spokesman, said firefighters responded to a structure fire on King Street off Millwood Avenue at 3 a.m. When firefighters got to the location, visible flames and heavy smoke could be seen coming from the building.
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control and there were no injuries reported from the incident.
According to Lewis, the fire was started because of improper disposal of smoking materials, which caused an estimated $45,000 in damages to the structure.
