Traffic Unit investigators with the Columbia Police Department are investigating the death of a 48-year-old Irmo woman who was struck by a car on Monday evening.
Coroner Gary Watts said in a news release Thursday that Melanie Owen, of 115 Ballentine Crossing, Irmo, died at 11:25 a.m. Wednesday at a local hospital because of injuries sustained from being hit by a motor vehicle.
Jennifer Timmons, a department spokeswoman, said shortly after 6 p.m. officers responded to a serious motor vehicle collision at the 1200 block of Rosewood Drive involving a bicycle and a SUV.
Timmons said the initial investigation indicated that the SUV was traveling west on Rosewood Drive while Owen was attempting to cross the street on her bicycle. Owen sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital to receive treatment.
The Columbia Traffic Safety Unit is continuing to investigate the incident to determine if charges will be filed, Timmons said.
