A 40-year-old Hilton Head Island woman who sped off after hitting a highway sign was later arrested after snorting cocaine in her broken-down car, according to a Beaufort County sheriff's report released Monday.
The woman hit a sign on the Cross Island Parkway at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, but kept driving, witnesses told officers.
About an hour later, a clerk at a gas station in greater Bluffton called deputies about a disabled BMW convertible in the parking lot. The clerk told officers the woman inside had a small bag of white powder on her lap just before they arrived.
Deputies found steam rising from the woman's car and radiator fluid leaking onto the parking lot.
Less than a gram of powder cocaine and two pills thought to be ecstasy were in the woman's possession, the report said.
She was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and likely will face drug charges after both substances are analyzed at a lab, the report said.
