A pregnant 19-year-old woman died Tuesday after she was shot multiple times in the parking lot of an apartment complex near Spring Valley High School, Richland County sheriff’s deputies said.
Dennis Morgan, 49, is charged with murder — accused of pulling out a pistol and shooting his niece after an argument at Spring Valley Apartments on Sparkleberry Lane, deputies said.
It’s unclear what the argument was about, sheriff’s department spokesman Lt. Chris Cowan said.
An autopsy is scheduled for today on the victim, whose name has not been released, pending notification of family members, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.
She had several gunshot wounds to the upper body, deputies said.
Investigators are awaiting autopsy results to determine how many months she was pregnant.
The 1 p.m. incident prompted the high school to be locked down for about five minutes, Richland 2 spokeswoman Theresa Riley said.
Morgan was apprehended after deputies conducted a traffic stop on a Dodge Neon in the area, deputies said.
Witnesses had given a detailed description of him, Cowan said.
Morgan is in Richland County jail.
