Quick work by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department has resulted in the arrests of six men connected to Sunday’s drug-related shooting death of a Columbia man.
Describing the matter as a "drug deal gone bad," Sheriff Thomas Summers said investigators reconstructing the scene determined that the man who died -- Christopher Donell Robinson -- was shot "in self-defense by another man whom Robinson and others were attempting to rob."
Robinson, 22, died from a single .22 caliber gunshot wound to his upper body.
The incident took place after early Sunday morning before dawn near Gaston but inside the Calhoun County line.
A number of young men, mostly from Gaston and Pelion areas in Lexington County, gathered with Robinson in the parking lot of an American Legion post where Old Sandy Run Road intersections with Pine Plain Road, authorities said.
Several weapons and some marijuana has been recovered, the sheriff said.
People charged are:- Matthew Ward, 24, of Pelion, is charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.- Angel Torres, 17, of Gaston, is charged with armed robbery and possession of a stolen pistol.- Danial Joe Hendren, 22, of Gaston. He is charged with armed robbery. - Derrick Lee Hendren, 18, of Gaston. He is charged with armed robbery. - Charles Stephen Day, Jr., 20, of Pelion. He is charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and unlawful carrying of a pistol.- Charles Chandler Aaron, 19, of Pelion. He is charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
All except Aaron are currently being held at the Orangeburg-Calhoun Detention Center. He was given a personal recognizance bond.
