MYRTLE BEACH - About 100 people attended a memorial service for a teen who was shot and killed by an officer authorities said he had stabbed earlier this month at his high school.
Friends of 16-year-old Trevor Varinecz called him a compassionate and caring teen at a service in Conway on Wednesday. Varinecz was shot five times Oct. 16.
Authorities say Varinecz asked to talk to Lance Cpl. Marcus Rhodes at Carolina Forest High School, then attacked him after the two went into an office. A police report says the teen had two knives, and the officer was able to take one of the knives away.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
