A child who was exposed to a stray cat this past weekend in Newberry County is being treated after the animal tested positive for rabies, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control said Wednesday.
The cat was one in a group of strays being fed. The cat attacked the child, who was visiting family in the Pomaria area, according to a DHEC release. It's the third confirmed rabid animal in Newberry County in 2009.
In 2008, there were 166 confirmed cases of rabies in animals in South Carolina. So far this year, there have been 140.
