Columbia police and firefighters descended on a street beside the State House Saturday night after receiving a report of a suspicious package, but the report turned out to be a false alarm.
Authorities used a robotic device to determine that the package - which appeared to be a gym bag - was not a threat, said Columbia Police Lt. Gregory Sharp. The bag was outside a bank on Sumter Street near the State House, city police spokesman Brick Lewis said. The incident was reported after 6 p.m. Saturday.
"Somebody thought it was a suspicious package, but it turned out to be a bag of clothing," Lewis said.- Sammy Fretwell
