Violent crime in Columbia increased during the first half of 2010, according to the FBI’s preliminary Uniform Crime Report.
There were 708 violent crimes in Columbia between January and June, compared with 611 violent crimes during the same six months in 2009, the report said. Violent crimes include murders, rapes, robberies and assaults.
Property crimes also slightly increased during the first half of 2010, compared with 2009. Columbia recorded 3,914 burglaries, larcenies, auto thefts and arsons between January and June. There were 3,505 of the same crimes in the first half of 2009, the report said.
The FBI releases its annual crime report in September each year. However, the preliminary report is released at the six-month mark to give the public a glimpse of crime rates for the year.
