Sheriff’s deputies are conserving more gasoline in an attempt to work within this year’s budget, Richland Sheriff Leon Lott said Monday.
Lott said investigators and deputies going to court are carpooling, while out-of-county presentations have been prohibited.
Earlier this month, Lott had said he would need an additional $400,000 to make it through the year. But the sheriff said he met with administrator Milton Pope last week to come up with strategies to avoid going over budget.
Lott said he wanted to see how conservation measures worked before considering another option: Two-week furloughs for the departments 90 to 100 part-time employees.
