A Camden man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Thursday for his role in a 2007 gang-related murder.
Markelle Reid, 22, pleaded guilty to murder in 2009 but his sentencing was delayed because he was cooperating with prosecutors in the case against his co-defendant. Judge Thomas W. Cooper Jr. gave Reid the 30-year sentence for killing 17-year-old Michael Smith in a McDonald's parking lot in Camden, 5th Circuit Soliticor Dan Johnson said.
Reid had wanted to join the Bloods gang even if it meant he had to kill someone, Johnson said. On December 7, 2007, Reid was kicked out of a party for fighting and went with a large group of kids to a McDonald's near I-20 in Camden. There, he got in another fight at the restaurant. Prosecutors said Reid shot Smith once in the chest during the fight in the restaurant parking lot.
