Columbia police are questioning five people taken into custody at a local apartment complex several hours after today’s 7:45 a.m. armed robbery of the Bi-Lo grocery store at 4464 Devine St.
Never miss a local story.
In that robbery, three men with guns held up the Bi-Lo and made off with an undisclosed amount of money, Columbia police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said.No one was injured.
The men fled in a white, four-door Mitsubishi sedan with Arkansas plates.
A short time later, police got a tip that men matching the description of the Bi-Lo armed robbers had been seen at Columbia Gardens Apartments, which is in the 4000 block of Plowden Road.
Police moved in to the apartment complex, which is located just off South Beltline Boulevard near the Columbia Hamilton-Owens Airport, and went door-to-door seeking the suspects.
By 10:30 a.m., five people – four men and one woman, who was pregnant – had been detained, Timmons said.
None of the five has been formally charged. Police released no names.
A Mitsubishi believed to have been used in the armed robbery was recovered at the Columbia Gardens complex.
Evidence in the car has been linked to the Bi-Lo armed robbery, said Timmons, who did not elaborate.
