A 24-year-old man shot and killed Saturday evening after a Benedict football game had a criminal record of minor arrests and convictions dating back to when he was 17. All charges were misdemeanors.
Dexter Addison, of 2822 Ansel Road, was first arrested in 2004 on a charge of disturbing schools, according to a SLED background check. The record shows no disposition in that case.
Over the years, Addison also had several possession of cocaine and marijuana charges. He was convicted of a 2005 possession of marijuana charge and fined $368, according to records.
In 2009, he was arrested on a charge of possession of marijuana and found not guilty in a trial several months later.
In his latest charge, in July, he was arrested on possession of 28 grams or less of marijuana. That had not come to court when he died.
According to Columbia police, Addison was firing a gun in a crowd and then at police when an officer shot and killed him. Chief Randy Scott said the officer – who has not been identified – acted properly. SLED is investigating.
