A man was robbed at gunpoint early Sunday morning around 1 a.m. in the 500 block of Woodrow Street, between Wheat and Blossom streets, within a block of Hand Middle School.
Two men, who had gotten out of a car, punched the victim in the face after he gave them his cell phone and an ATM card, according to police reports.
The men fled; the victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for bruises and a cut, then released.
The incident was the second street robbery in a week in downtown Columbia.
Last Thursday evening, a University of South Carolina student was walking in the 1900 block of Pendleton Street when a gray SUV pulled up next to him. A man in the SUV pulled a gun and demanded money. The student said he didn’t have any money and gave the robber an iPod.
Columbia police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said that as of Sunday night, the police had no direct evidence the two incidents are linked, but “We are exploring all possibilities.”
