A West Columbia man charged with firing gunshots at a child during an alleged armed robbery has been found not guilty by a Lexington County jury.
Andres Cruz-Guzman, a 34-year-old construction worker, was acquitted of charges of assault with intent to kill, armed robbery and kidnapping, said his defense attorney, Jack Duncan. West Columbia Police Department investigators had accused Cruz-Guzman in January 2010 of holding up a Hispanic couple and their child after asking for a ride in a Walmart parking lot.
West Columbia police also identified Cruz-Guzman as a suspect in other armed robberies in the area. He has two other charges pending in Lexington County, Duncan said.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also has a detainer on Cruz-Guzman, a Mexican immigrant, Duncan said. Authorities most likely will deport him once his other cases are finalized.
