The yearly cost of jailing people arrested by Columbia police has climbed by almost 33 percent to about $434,200, city manager Steve Gantt told a City Council committee this week.
Though the $25 per-day rate that Richland County charges Columbia for each inmate kept at the county jail will not increase for at least another five years, the number of arrests is rising, Gantt said. He reported that Columbia police sent 6,213 people to the jail during the fiscal year that ended June 30. That compares with 3,298 people jailed during fiscal 2009-10 at a yearly cost of $326,775, Gantt said.
The Public Safety Committee took no action after Gantt’s report.
