The person who beheaded two cats and a dog in Spring Valley recently may possibly be a future serial killer or even a member of a Satanic cult.
“Serial killers start with animal mutilations, and we want to make sure we don’t have something like that that’s started – we want to stop it before it grows any further,” Sheriff Leon Lott said Wednesday.
A Satanic cult – members of which are known for animal sacrifice – may also be a possibility, even though at this point that seems remote, Lott said.
“We’re looking at that also,” Lott said, “but usually, when you have a Satanic cult, there’s more involved than what we have seen so far.”
Never miss a local story.
Another theory investigators are considering is that it may be someone who is just acting unspeakably cruelly toward pets.
“You could have someone who is just killing animals just for the supposed fun of it – and torturing them,” Lott said. “We want to stop that, too.”
Two cats have been beheaded and their paws cut off. A dog was beheaded, skinned and its carcass nailed to a tree, according to the department.
Lott urged county residents to keep track of their pets and note any suspicious characters immediately.
Lott said residents who know something should call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
Sheriff’s Department spokesman Curtis Wilson said the department was only officially notified of the mutilations Tuesday and was still gathering information.
Veteran investigator Holly Wagoner, who handles animal abuse cases for the department, is handling the case, Lott said.
