Horry County police charged a 43-year-old Longs man with 23 counts of animal cruelty after officers found two dead dogs, several emaciated dogs, six chickens and three turkeys in poor living conditions,Sgt. Robert Kegler said.
John Patrick Grudzien, 43, was charged with 23 counts of ill treatment of animals and was being held Thursday at J. Reuben Long Detention Center, Kegler said.
Horry County Environmental Services officers went to a home on Coney Drive in the Longs community on June 18 to check on the welfare of several animals, Kegler said.
Officers found two dogs that were dead on the property and the other animals were found in poor living conditions. At the time, officers did not make contact with the property owner, Kegler said.
On June 19, officers returned to the property with a search warrant and an order to pick up the animals.Officers took 19 dogs, six chickens and three turkeys from the property, Kegler said.
The animals were examined by a veterinary technician, and as a result police obtained arrest warrants for Grudzien, who surrendered to police on Thursday.
