4-year-old hit by stray bullet

A 4-year-old girl is in critical but stable condition after she was hit by a stray bullet from a car-to-car shootout Monday evening, according to Columbia police.

The girl was watching TV about 8 p.m. in her apartment at The Colony complex on Bailey Street when a stray bullet came into the house and struck her in the upper body, Columbia Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said.

Police think the bullet that struck the girl came from a car-to-car shootout that started down the road from the girl’s apartment. Video surveillance from the scene also showed suspects shooting outside of a car. Four adults were in the home with the girl at the time of the shooting.

The Colony Apartments are off of West Beltline Boulevard near Farrow Road and SC 277.

Officers Monday night canvassed the area looking for anyone with information on who might be responsible for injuring the girl, Timmons said. Investigators think that one of the cars involved in the shooting was a silver mid-2000s model Dodge Charger.
