Police: Dispute in Lancaster County over cigarettes sends two to hospital; three arrested

A dispute over a pack of cigarettes led to the shooting of one man, the beating of another, and the arrest of three people on assault charges, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday to a reported shooting at the WoodCreek Apartments on West Meeting Street in Lancaster, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies found a Lancaster man, 31, shot and another Lancaster man, 36, badly beaten.

Both men were airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center, and they were still in the hospital Sunday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.

Witnesses said two men fled from the apartments into nearby woods. They were caught after a foot chase and charged in the assault.

Charged were Kyndra Dynise Jones, 20, 117 South Woodlawn Dr., Lancaster; Brandon J'lil Thompson, 20, 4011 Stonesboro Road, Heath Springs; and Ronnel Chelvis Thompson, 21, 1739 Usher Road, Lancaster, according to the sheriff’s office.

All three are charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. Ronnel Thompson also has been charged with attempted murder.

All three were in jail Sunday afternoon awaiting a bond hearing.

An investigation determined that the suspects had a dispute with the 36-year-old victim over a pack of ciagrettes. All three suspects repeatedly punched and kicked the man in the parking lot, according to the sheriff’s office.

The 31-year-old victim, armed with a firearm, tried to assist the beating victim. But Ronnell Thompson shot at the man several times, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Thompsons were arrested after a foot chase through the woods. Jones later turned herself in at the sheriff’s office.
