A 21-year-old motorcyclist from Fountain Inn died after a collision with a SUV on Howard Drive early Thursday while being pursued by Fountain Inn police, authorities said.

A 21-year-old motorcyclist from Fountain Inn died after a collision with a SUV on Howard Drive early Thursday while being pursued by Fountain Inn police, authorities said.

Zachary R. Shaver of Jones Mill Road died of a chest injury, said Mike Ellis, chief deputy coroner for Greenville County.

Shaver, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:33 a.m. by an EMS crew, Ellis said.

Fountain Inn Police Chief Keith Morton said “a veteran officer” was pursuing Shaver and his 2005 Yamaha in connection with a suspected “traffic violation and reckless driving.”

He said he couldn’t get into specific information because of the ongoing investigation. The pursuit “was short” before Shaver hit the back of a 2004 Mercury SUV, according to Morton and Ellis said.

Morton said he didn’t know what speeds the vehicles were traveling before the crash near 731 Howard Drive at 12:25 a.m.

The driver of Mercury, a Simpsonville woman, wasn’t injured, authorities said.

The crash occurred about a mile north of Fountain Inn, according to Lance Cpl. Tony Keller of the state Highway Patrol. Troopers are investigating the incident.

Morton said he and his staff would review the videotape of the chase.
