A 20-year-old Columbia man died early Tuesday morning after being shot in the upper body at 4130 Hardscrabble Road shortly after midnight.
The victim was identified as Brandon Logan Kilbourne, said Richland County coroner Gary Watts.
Kilbourne was a volunteer with the Lugoff Fire Department, Fire Chief Dennis Ray confirmed Tuesday evening.
“He began with us as an explorer but only was with us a few months as a volunteer,” Ray said in a text exchange.
Never miss a local story.
“Our firefighters remember him as very passionate about the fire service and he loved training with our firefighters,” Ray said.
Deputies responded to a shots fired call on the 4100 block of Hardscrabble Road shortly after midnight Tuesday morning where they found the wounded Kilbourne. He was taken to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s department said.
One person was detained overnight after the shooting but was later released, Richland County spokesman Curtis Wilson said.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Living Springs Lutheran Church.
An investigation of the shooting by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department continues.
