RICHLAND COUNTY, SC An off-duty Richland County deputy, out for some early evening fishing at Pine Lake Park off Old Garners Ferry Road, pulled a man and woman to safety Friday afternoon after their boat overturned.
After a park employee sought his help, Trobathian TJ Johnson jumped in the lake and swam 50 yards to the overturned boat. Neither the man nor the woman, dumped in the water when their boat capsized, could swim, Sheriff Leon Lott said in a news release.
In two trips to the boat, Johnson ferried first the 60-year-old woman, then her 58-year-old husband to safety. He also retrieved the boat and secured it on shore.
Johnson said “divine intervention” put him and his aunt at Pine Lake Park Friday afternoon. They had first planned to go fishing in Orangeburg.
