Kershaw deputies arrested a man Saturday after they say he admitted to smoking marijuana on a trip from Florence to Columbia.
Corie Andre Chandler, 33, had three young children in the back of his vehicle when a deputy stopped him for failing to yield while entering Interstate 20 and not wearing a seat belt, according to the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office incident report. He was charged with child endangerment, driving under the influence, an open container violation, a drug paraphernalia violation and a seat belt violation. The incident happened at about 5:15 p.m.
Chandler told the officer that he had smoked some marijuana when they left Florence, according to the report. During a search of the vehicle, deputies found remnants of marijuana cigarettes, as well as an open, half-empty apple beer that was cold to the touch, the report says.
The deputy wrote in the report that Chandler said the beverage was his and that he had been drinking it because he liked the flavor. He performed poorly on sobriety tests, the report says.
Officers turned the three children over to their grandmother. Chandler was taken to the Kershaw County Detention Center.
A breathalyzer showed zero alcohol in Chandler’s blood, according to the report. Deputies requested a blood and urine sample, which Chandler provided.
