Richland 1 superintendent to announce retirement

Richland 1 superintendent Percy Mack is retiring.

Richland 1 superintendent Percy Mack is retiring.

A news conference is set for 4:30 p.m. today to make the formal announcement.

Mack, 63 and a native of Savannah, Ga., came to Columbia in July 2008 from Dayton, Ohio, where he raised the graduation rate as the top administrator of that city's schools.

When he arrived in Columbia, Mack said his top priority would be improving academic achievement and lifting five under-performing schools out of academic malaise.

He was soon plunged into the economic recession of 2008 and, along with the school board, guided the Richland 1 system through deep budget cuts with an even hand.

Richland 1 stretches from downtown Columbia east to Lower Richland and west to St. Andrews.
