A driver who got out of his car late Tuesday night on Crystal Springs Drive in Lexington County was hit and killed by a passing vehicle, the S.C. Highway Patrol reported Wednesday morning.
Daniel M. Wainwright, 48, of Lexington died from injuries sustained in the accident, according to Lexington County Coroner Earl Wells.
The crash on the two-lane road took place about 10:35 p.m. several miles south of I-20 and the Red Bank community.
Wainwright had been driving a 1995 Ford, and it was parked in the roadway, said Lance Cpl. Judd Jones.
Jones said the driver, 18, was standing outside the car at the time of the collision.
“The oncoming car, a 1998 Chrysler, was traveling west, and the 1995 Ford was facing east,” he said.
The driver in the oncoming car attempted to go around the stopped vehicle, but struck the vehicle and then hit the person standing outside, Jones said.
Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office continues to investigate.
