Former Lexington-Richland 5 school board member Kim Murphy won’t ask voters this fall to return her to the post from which she was ousted.

She didn’t join the field of candidates on the Nov. 4 ballot who signed up by the deadline Friday to vie for 23 posts in seven Midlands school boards.

Murphy didn’t explain why she backed off a once-promised effort to reclaim the post.

“After much thought, it is with heavy heart that I will not seek to run,” she said. “I greatly appreciate the support and encouragement from my supporters and I plan to stay involved in the schools.”

Murphy continues a legal challenge to her removal in March 2013 for alleged nonresidency.

The post she held has been vacant since then. But it will be filled at the upcoming ballot.

A fresh candidacy would have set the stage for opponents to try to force Murphy off the ballot even though questions about the location of her home in the Chapin area are unsettled.

Her ouster came after fellow board members agreed that long-observed county borders are incorrect and she lives in Lexington County, not Richland County as required for the post to which she was elected in 2010.

Supporters say she is being unfairly penalized for mistakes by county officials.

A Tea Party favorite, Murphy crusades against what she considering overspending and mismanagement of schools with 16,000 students in Chapin, Irmo, Dutch Fork, Harbison and St. Andrews that are among the best in South Carolina.

Her views put her at odds with other board members, who deny her ouster was a political vendetta as claimed by conservative groups.
