Coastal Carolina University is sponsoring a "Love Your Body Day" on Wednesday at the Lib Jackson Student Center deck from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The goal of the event, free and open to the public, is to raise awareness about health and body images for men and women.
Love Your Body Day, sponsored nationally by the National Organization for Women Foundation, targets industries that organizers say use negative images and ads to lead women to think their bodies are unappealing.
Julinna Oxley, director of Coastal Carolina's Interdisciplinary Studies and Women's and Gender Studies programs, said 80 percent of women are dissatisfied with their bodies.
Never miss a local story.
"Love Your Body Day is an opportunity to encourage people, both men and women, to respect their own bodies and recognize that every body is different," Oxley said. "Ultimately, the idea is to encourage people to think for themselves about what is healthy and how they can be comfortable in their own skin."
