Twenty community groups have filed applications to open charter schoolsacross South Carolina.
The applications will be reviewed by the state's Charter School AdvisoryCommittee for approved or denial. Those that get the OK will open in2012.
Eleven of the 20 applications would be sponsored by local schooldistricts across the state, and nine would be sponsored by the statewideS.C. Public Charter School District.
Three are proposed for Columbia.
-- Virgin Johnson Academy of Excellence, through the statewide CharterSchool District, K-5 with plans to add a grade each year until it isK-12
-- Columbia Charter School (Columbia), also through the Charter SchoolDistrict, K-12
-- V.V. Reid Middle Academy Charter, through Richland School District 1,grades 6-8
Public charter schools have seen dramatic statewide growth in recentyears. More than 16,000 students currently are enrolled in the state's44 public charter schools - nearly twice as many students as wereenrolled two years ago.
