Approximately 4,500 National Guard, federal, state, and local emergency management personnel, are taking part in Operation Vigilant Guard between March 5-12th. The joint regional training exercise tests the ability of the National Guard to support operations based on simulated emergency scenarios such as the landfall of a major hurricane, a collapsed building, widespread fires and mass casualties. Many of the scenarios are being hosted around Georgetown.
“Building these relationships helps the response process in the future,” said Sam Hodge, Director of Emergency Management in Georgetown County. Operations around Georgetown Monday included a field hospital set-up at the Georgetown County Airport, search, rescue, and HAZMAT response in a demolished section of the former Choppee High School, and helicopter evacuations from the Hobcaw Point Fishing Pier.
