State Guard plans Camden hike for hurricane preparedness

The South Carolina State Guard will hold its first annual Hurricane Hike this Saturday in downtown Camden.

The State Guard – volunteers who assist the S.C. National Guard in times of emergency –is holding this hike to hone its readiness to rapidly deploy during a hurricane or other natural or man-made disaster.

State Guard members, along with members of the S.C. Guard, U.S. Army and other military and first responder organizations will hike nine miles carrying a 45-pound backpack filled with supplies that would be brought into an area that may be impassable by vehicles in the aftermath of a disaster.

The hike will start at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Camden National Guard Armory, 1100 Ehrenchlou Drive, and finish at noon at 1308 Broad St.

More than 200 people are expected to participate. The public is invited to watch the hike, learn more about the State Guard and how to become a member and attend a noon luncheon.
