One of the nation’s Tuskegee Airmen is being honored this weekend at a steeplechase event in Camden.
Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Leroy Bowman is part of the Saluting our Military celebration taking part Saturday as part of the Colonial Cup in Camden. Bowman lives in Sumter.
The Tuskegee Airmen were America’s first African-American fighter pilots. Black military personnel were not allowed to become pilots before the war, but the Tuskegee Airmen became one of World War II’s most respected fighter units.
Their success is credited with helping prompt the integration of the military in 1948.
